Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants are filled with a gel that provides a more natural-feeling breast.  After many years of clinical trials, the FDA approved silicone gel implants in 2006. The FDA-approved gel implants may be used in patients age 22 or older. There are two separate brands of silicone implant that Dr. Stoker uses to meet his patients’ needs. Today’s silicone implants are less likely to rupture than they used to be, and are also less prone to the problem than saline breast implants.

Dr. David Stoker is also one of several prominent plastic surgeons conducting a clinical trial on the latest advances in silicone breast implant technology – cohesive gel breast implants. The difference is that cohesive gel breast implants contain a firmer gel than that used in conventional silicone breast implants.  Both patients and doctors are interested in this trial because cohesive gel implants are probably less likely to rupture than older generations of implants.  Participants who are interested in taking part must be at least 18 years of age, as well as meet other inclusion criteria that Dr. Stoker will explain to you in full during your assessment.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants have an impressive long-term safety profile; they are also less expensive. If saline breast implants rupture inside the body the saline is harmless and easily absorbed by the body. The saline is the same as that used for IV fluids. Rupture of saline breast implants is quickly noticed since the implants lose their shape as the saline solution exits the implant shell. A disadvantage to saline breast implants is that they do not provide as natural of a feel as the silicone breast implant option. They are also more prone to ripples than gel implants.
