Male breast reduction is not something most men want to talk about.  The procedure is gaining in popularity, however, because of increased awareness of the medical condition gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is the overdevelopment of the male breast caused by excess fat or breast tissue. Dr. David Stoker, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Los Angeles, has years of experience in diagnosing and treating gynecomastia. Multiple male breast reduction options are available depending on your specific situation.

Excess male breast tissue is very common. In fact, a surprising 60 percent of males worldwide have some degree of gynecomastia.  It typically develops either in adolescence or in middle age. Many men who have gynecomastia are understandably self-conscious about their condition.

Male Breast Reduction Procedures:
Depending on your individual case, Dr. Stoker may perform any one of the following male breast reduction procedures (or a combination thereof):

This procedure works best for males who have a higher percentage body fat and adequate skin elasticity.  Liposuction is the treatment of choice when gynecomastia is largely due to fat deposition as opposed to excess breast tissue.  A tiny incision is made on the lower crease of the breast. Then a thin, hollow tube (called a cannula) is used to remove the fatty portion of the breast.  Typically Dr. Stoker performs this procedure with local anesthesia.

Breast tissue removal

Firm, glandular gynecomastia tissue cannot be removed by liposuction; it needs to be removed with surgery.  An incision is made along the lower edge of the areola. Through this incision, Dr. Stoker removes the excess breast tissue. During this process it may be also be necessary to remove a small amount of excess fat as well.  Typically Dr. Stoker performs this procedure under local anesthesia.

Excess skin removal

In cases such as massive weight loss, in addition to liposuction and breast tissue removal, skin removal may be necessary. The excess skin is removed with incisions around the areola and under the breast.  This procedure typically requires general anesthesia.

Male Breast Reduction - Recovery
After male breast reduction surgery, you will wear a vest-like support garment for about a week to decrease swelling and bruising.  Dr. Stoker may also prescribe Arnica montana pills to reduce bruising. Pain is usually minor and easily taken care of with mild pain relievers like aspirin or ibuprofen. Most of Dr. Stoker’s patients are able to return to work and a normal routine in a few days. Although the incision area will continue to heal for a couple of months, you will be able to see improvements in the shape of your chest immediately.
