Cohesive Gel Breast Implants

Dr. David Stoker, along with other select plastic surgeons, has been chosen to participate in the FDA clinical trial on cohesive gel breast implants. These newer implants, which have sometimes been called “gummy bear” implants, contain a firmer gel than the typical silicone breast implants. The distinguishing feature of cohesive gel breast implants is the thicker gel composition - in fact, a soft solid - which provides very important benefits:

  • if the implant were to rupture, the gel is less likely to migrate into the surrounding tissues
  • the implant is more likely to maintain its original shape without ripples

To inquire about these cohesive gel breast implants and see if they are an option for your breast augmentation feel free to call Dr. Stoker’s office at (310) 300-1779 or request a consultation online.

Cohesive gel breast implants have multiple advantages
Through clinical trials in the U.S., Dr. Stoker and colleagues are trying to prove that there are multiple advantages to the “gummy bear” implant, including the following:

  • Ability to retain shape
  • Highly resistant to folds and rippling

The cohesive gel breast implants are filled with a gel that is unlikely to shift from one area of the shell to the other.  Shell collapse and folds are less common, even in long-term follow-up.

  • Low rupture rate

Most ruptures are believed to occur along folds in the shell.  Since the implant is unlikely to fold it is expected that shell failures will occur much less frequently.  Additionally, there is a lower chance of leakage via diffusion out of the cohesive gel breast implant.

  • Capsular contraction occurs less often

Because diffusion of silicone across the shell is thought to be lower compared to regular silicone breast implants, the researchers believe that the scar tissue capsule that forms after implantation will not be as hard. Therefore, there should be less chance of capsular contracture when using cohesive gel breast implants.

Even though cohesive gel breast implants have many advantages, there are some reasons to choose other implant types as well.  Dr. Stoker will explain your options to help you make the best decision.
