Breast Augmentation/Breast Implants

Many women are unhappy with the shape or size of their breasts and choose to have breast augmentation to boost their confidence and self-esteem. For this reason, breast augmentation – the surgical enhancement of a woman’s breasts using breast implants – is the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery in the United States.

Why might I consider breast augmentation?
Some Los Angeles women feel that by increasing their breast size they can achieve greater self-confidence.  For others, they would like to feel more proportional between their top and bottom so they fit better into their clothing. It is also not uncommon for mothers to seek breast augmentation to restore what was lost with breastfeeding and aging. With larger breasts, you can feel totally comfortable and sexy wearing low-cut dresses and tops that show off the décolletage, but there is usually much more to the issue of breast size than simply having a wider range of fashion choices. The breasts are a defining characteristic of feminine beauty and women with smaller breasts commonly experience lower self-esteem related to their appearance.

Los Angeles breast surgeon Dr. David Stoker is widely acclaimed both in the mainstream media and among his physician peers as one of the country’s foremost experts in performing breast augmentation.

In which conditions is breast augmentation most commonly used?

  • To enhance the fullness and projection of naturally small breasts
This is the most frequent indication of breast augmentation surgery.  In most cases, having small breasts is hereditary.
  • To correct diminished breast volume that often occurs after pregnancy and breast feeding or after significant weight loss
Here, breast implants can make a dramatic difference, especially when used in combination with other post-pregnancy procedures such as a tummy tuck or a breast lift.
  • To provide a cosmetic prosthesis after mastectomy or injury to the breast
The physical and psychological trauma of mastectomy can be severe; having a breast surgeon such as Dr. Stoker who is experienced in the latest, most advanced techniques of cosmetic reconstruction using breast implants is crucial.
  • To correct breast asymmetry

Types of Breast Implants
There are many types of breast implants available to women considering breast augmentation.  Silicone breast implants are the most popular choice in Dr. Stoker’s practice now that the implants are considered safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  Cohesive gel breast implants, sometimes known as “gummy” implants, are now FDA approved as well and provide a very natural feel. In addition, because they are firmer and more cohesive, there is a reduced possibility of implant rupture or ripples. Saline breast implants are also a nice option for some patients.  Many different sizes and shapes of breast implants are available, allowing you to achieve the desired breast contour.
