Breast Asymmetry Correction

Breast asymmetry correction is a surgical procedure performed to correct differences in the shape and size of a woman’s breasts. It may also address disparities in nipple position. While you might think that breasts always come in perfectly matched pairs, in fact some variance in size and shape from one breast to the other is quite normal. It is only when this variance is more extreme that the asymmetry becomes noticeable. In these cases, the breasts appear clearly mismatched, causing many women affected by the condition to become embarrassed or self-conscious.  As a well-known breast surgeon in Los Angeles, Dr. David Stoker has seen and treated many patients with breast asymmetry. Correction of the problem is often much easier and straightforward than they ever imagined, and both short- and long-term results of breast asymmetry correction surgery are excellent.

Breast Asymmetry Correction-Choice of Augmentation or Reduction

In simplest terms, if you have asymmetrical breasts, one breast is substantially larger than the other. Dr. Stoker’s role as a breast surgeon is to even out the size difference. Based on your individual situation, he can make one of two choices:

  1. Make the smaller breast larger. This is accomplished by a breast augmentation procedure wherein breast implants bring the size of the smaller breast close to the size of the larger breast.
  2. Make the larger breast smaller. If one of the breasts is particularly and disproportionately large – especially if it is pendulous and causing pain and discomfort just by virtue of its size – a breast reduction procedure may be the correct procedure for you. For some patients, adding a breast lift at the same time may be appropriate and yield a favorable cosmetic outcome.

Breast Asymmetry Correction after Mastectomy or Lumpectomy

In many cases where women have to undergo mastectomy of one breast followed by flap reconstruction of that breast (which may be performed with or without breast implants), the opposite breast will in turn appear too large. This disparity may be corrected using breast reduction. Similarly, if a breast tumor is able to be removed by lumpectomy, the remaining surgical defect must be cosmetically revised. In this process, the affected breast is reduced and the opposite breast is likewise reduced to match. Since both breasts are reduced, this is known as a bilateral reduction. The practice of performing surgical reduction of the breasts after removal of a tumor (lumpectomy) or an entire breast (mastectomy) has become standard in reconstructive surgery and is known as oncoplastic reduction.
