Areola Reduction Surgery: Puffy Areolas
If you are suffering from puffy areolas there are different treatments out there that can help you depending on your aesthetic goals. Breast augmentation can often fix puffy areolas, but implants are only recommended for women who want larger breasts. Another treatment for puffy areolas is to remove an outer ring of the areola skin. During its removal, Dr. Stoker preserves the milk ducts and nerves so that the ability to breastfeed will be unaffected. The areola is then sutured to the surrounding skin using an intricate technique.

The recovery for this type of areola reduction surgery is rapid. Some patients can return to work the same day, but others wait 2 to 3 days to resume normal activity. You should refrain from heavy exercise until the incision is fully healed.

Areola Reduction Surgery: Large Diameter Areolas
The surgical treatment for large diameter areola correction is similar to the treatment for puffy areolas. An outside ring of the areola is removed leaving the milk ducts and nerves intact. A “purse string” suture is then placed around the circumference of the outer ring. The stitch is then tightened so that the larger outside ring of skin is made smaller to connect to the areola.

Recovery from large diameter areola reduction surgery is very quick.  Just one day off work may be needed and the incision should heal within a month. However, all patients are different and it is important that you speak with Dr. Stoker about an individualized recovery plan.
